Fossil Carbon Notebooks

Understanding fossil carbon, its impacts, and the pathways towards Geological Net Zero.

The Fossil Carbon Notebooks are a collection of thematic analyses exploring the scientific, technical, economic and political dimensions of fossil carbon management.

Their purpose is to make complex issues accessible to scientists, industrial decision-makers, policymakers and the wider public.

Main Research Themes

The Global Fossil Carbon Cycle

Fossil carbon resources, extraction, combustion, emissions and the long-term consequences of transferring geological carbon into the active carbon cycle.

Climate History and Geological Analogues

Lessons from major past climate disturbances, including the Permian–Triassic extinction and the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM).

Carbon Storage and Permanence

Geological CO₂ storage, mineralization, biochar, BioCCS and methods for verifying the durability of carbon sequestration.

Defossilization Pathways

Reducing dependence on fossil carbon through electrification, energy efficiency, sustainable biofuels and alternative industrial processes.

Responsibility and Climate Governance

The Geological Net Zero Principle, producer-to-consumer responsibility, carbon accounting and financing mechanisms for the GNZ Pact.

Publications

The notebooks will be progressively made available with their original titles, publication dates, supporting figures, scientific references and downloadable PDF versions.

The collection is intended to evolve as new scientific findings, technologies and policy proposals emerge.

Upcoming publications
New Fossil Carbon Notebooks will be published progressively.
